Advertising disclosure: Tipu is reader-supported — we may earn a commission when you join an operator through our links, at no cost to you. It never affects our independent ratings (how we rate). 18+ · T&Cs apply.

Welcome to Tipu — an independent New Zealand guide to online gambling. We are not an operator and we do not run any games: we play-test, compare and rank the offshore casinos, sportsbooks and crypto sites that accept Kiwi players, then explain the law, the banking and the maths so you can make your own call. Everything below is written for New Zealand: prices in NZD, the DIA as the regulator, and the reality that from 1 December 2026 a locally licensed online-casino regime finally begins. If you only read one thing, read this: playing offshore is legal for you as a player, but the site itself sits outside NZ oversight until the new regime beds in, so operator choice matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Best online casinos in New Zealand

These are the real-money casinos we rate most highly for Kiwis right now, ranked on safety, bonus value, pokies and live-dealer range, NZD banking and — the one players feel most — withdrawal speed. Each has been through our testing process: we deposit our own money, play, and cash out to see how long a real withdrawal actually takes. For the full field of 15 and deeper reviews, head to our best online casinos hub.

Newer to the scene? Our new online casinos and new casinos pages track fresh launches, while pokies fans should start with online pokies and the highest-RTP pokies list. If you want to try before you deposit, free pokies let you demo games in NZD-equivalent play money.

New to real-money play? Set a deposit limit before you start, treat any bonus as entertainment rather than income, and remember the house edge never sleeps. Free help is available 24/7 from the Gambling Helpline NZ on 0800 654 655 or at safergambling.org.nz.

Best sports betting sites for Kiwis

New Zealand has exactly one locally licensed bookmaker — the TAB (plus its Betcha exchange-style product). Everything else Kiwis bet with is an offshore sportsbook. The offshore books usually offer sharper odds, deeper markets and bigger sign-up offers, but they sit outside NZ consumer protection. Our full breakdown lives on the sports betting hub; the shortlist below is a starting point.

Best crypto casinos

Crypto casinos are the fastest-growing corner of the offshore market, and for good reason: withdrawals often land in minutes rather than days, many sites run no-KYC or light-KYC onboarding, and Bitcoin rails sidestep the card-block friction some NZ banks apply to gambling merchants. The trade-off is volatility and thinner recourse if something goes wrong. Our crypto casinos hub covers it in depth.

How we test and rank operators

Rankings only mean something if the process behind them is honest. We run every operator through the same 25-point methodology, weighted so that the things that can cost you money count most:

FactorWeightWhat we actually check
Safety & licensing25%Valid licence (Curaçao, Anjouan or Malta), SSL, ownership transparency, complaint history
Payouts & banking20%Real withdrawal timed end-to-end, NZD/crypto support, fees, pending-time policy
Bonus value & fair terms20%Wagering multiple, game weighting, max-bet rule, cashout cap, expiry
Game range & software20%Pokies count, live-dealer studios, verified RTPs, provider list
Support & RG tools15%Live chat response, deposit limits, self-exclusion, reality checks

We fund test accounts ourselves, we do not let operators buy a higher score, and commercial links never change a rating — see our about page and author profiles for who does the work, or get in touch to flag anything.

What is changing in NZ in 2026

This is the biggest shift in New Zealand online gambling in a generation. The Online Casino Gambling Act received royal assent in May 2026 and the regime it creates goes live on 1 December 2026, administered by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). The headline points:

Until a site holds a DIA licence, it is offshore and outside NZ jurisdiction. That does not make it illegal for you to play, but it does mean your protection depends on the operator's offshore licence and its own conduct. Full detail on our NZ online casino law page and the plain-English is online betting legal in NZ? guide.

Banking for Kiwis

You can fund an offshore account two broad ways: traditional NZD methods (cards, POLi-style bank transfer, e-wallets) or cryptocurrency. Cards are simplest but some NZ banks decline gambling-coded transactions; crypto is faster to withdraw and dodges those blocks but adds a buying step and price volatility. Here is how the common methods stack up for New Zealand players:

The offshore operators we list are built for Kiwis and settle in a mix of NZD and crypto. Common deposit and withdrawal methods include Visa & Mastercard, bank transfer (POLi has been discontinued in NZ, so most sites now use direct bank transfer or Blinkpay/account2account), prepaid vouchers such as Neosurf, Flexepin and Paysafecard, NZD-friendly e-wallets like MiFinity and Jeton, and cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Litecoin). Crypto is the fastest route for withdrawals — often minutes rather than the 1–3 business days a bank transfer takes.

For the fastest cashouts overall, crypto usually wins — see fast-withdrawal crypto casinos and our fast payout casinos comparison. If you would rather stick to NZD, prioritise e-wallets over cards for withdrawal speed.

Casino vs sports vs crypto — which is right for you?

They scratch different itches. Pick based on how you like to play, not just the biggest bonus number.

Choose a casino if…

You want pokies, live blackjack or roulette, and a sit-down session where the maths is fixed and you control stake size. Start at online casinos or pokies.

Choose sports betting if…

You follow rugby, league, cricket or football and believe your knowledge gives you an edge. The sports hub and apps are your entry point.

Choose crypto if…

Fast withdrawals and privacy matter most, and you are comfortable buying and holding coin. See crypto casinos.

Whatever you pick, the tax position is usually the same: for recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in New Zealand. There are nuances with crypto — read gambling winnings and tax in NZ.

Frequently asked questions

Is online gambling legal in New Zealand?

Yes, for players. A New Zealand resident can legally deposit and play at offshore online casinos and bookmakers. NZ law restricts operators, not players: online casino games are not currently licensed for operation inside NZ (that changes from 1 December 2026 under the DIA), and since 2025 offshore operators may not actively market to Kiwis. See our legality guide.

What is changing on 1 December 2026?

The Online Casino Gambling Act — royal assent in May 2026 — launches a DIA-licensed online-casino regime capped at 15 licences. For the first time there will be locally licensed and regulated online casinos in New Zealand, with age verification, harm-minimisation duties and a problem-gambling levy. Details on our NZ online casino law page.

Do I pay tax on my winnings?

For recreational players, generally no. Gambling winnings are not treated as taxable income in NZ because they are not income from a profession. Converting crypto winnings back to NZD can be a separate taxable event under IRD rules, since IRD treats crypto as property. See gambling winnings and tax.

What is the legal gambling age?

You must be 18 or over to gamble online. Land-based casinos in NZ require you to be 20. Reputable operators verify age and identity before releasing withdrawals.

Which is the only NZ-licensed bookmaker?

The TAB (Te Puna Whakatupu / TAB NZ), along with its Betcha product, is the only bookmaker licensed to operate inside New Zealand. Every other sportsbook Kiwis use is offshore. Compare them in TAB vs offshore bookmakers.

Why did Bet365 leave New Zealand?

The 2025 reforms barred offshore operators from marketing to New Zealanders. Rather than operate under those restrictions, Bet365 chose to exit the NZ market. Kiwis can still legally play at other offshore sites; those operators simply cannot advertise to you.

How do I know an operator is safe?

Look for a valid offshore licence (Curaçao, Anjouan or Malta), SSL encryption, independent game testing (eCOGRA or iTech Labs), published RTPs, transparent bonus terms and working responsible-gambling tools. Every site we list is checked against our 25-point methodology.

What is the fastest way to withdraw?

Crypto, in most cases — Bitcoin, Litecoin or USDT withdrawals often clear within minutes to an hour after approval, versus one to five business days for cards. See fast payout casinos and fast-withdrawal crypto casinos.

Do I have to use crypto?

No. Plenty of sites accept NZD via card, bank transfer and e-wallets. Crypto is optional — it is simply the fastest and most private option. See our crypto casinos guide if you want to try it.
