Horticulture is the largest and fastest growing industry in Gisborne. With a famously good climate and fertile soils, Gisborne is a food production powerhouse.

From juicy oranges to succulent corn, kiwifruit, apples, persimmons, wine and field grown vegetables – our region grows an abundance of produce, enjoyed around the world. And we’re growing fast. With over 1,000 people working in horticulture in Gisborne during 2017 and nearly 300 growers, we’re going to need double the number of employees over the coming five years.

Seasonal Production Calendar

The calendar below outlines the peak production times for each variety of produce within our diverse horticulture sector. The strong growing climate opens up a wealth of employment and career opportunities for our Tairawhiti community.
